The organization strengthens progressive movements by training and educating nonprofit organizations on effective, nonpartisan advocacy, while leveraging collective action to drive meaningful change within state and federal courts.
Through its Bolder Advocacy program, Alliance for Justice serves as the nation’s leading resource on the legal framework that enables nonprofits and foundations to engage in advocacy. Bolder Advocacy helps organizations navigate complex legal and regulatory requirements so they can advocate with confidence and impact. As a highly recognized and trusted brand within progressive circles, the program has supported many of the most significant progressive policy victories of the past two decades. Together with AFJ’s judicial work, Bolder Advocacy represents a core strategy for advancing long-term progressive policy change.
The Challenge
Empowering Nonprofits With Advocacy Training and Leadership in Judicial Reform
Alliance for Justice set out to bring its programs together under a unified brand, presenting AFJ as a cohesive progressive force that connects movements to one another and to the courts. The effort emphasized how AFJ’s work makes real progress possible and why the organization is a powerful and strategic investment for those who care about democracy and progressive values.
A Unified User Experience, and Content Strategy to Unite AFJ’s Audiences
The Bolder Advocacy resource library and Alliance for Justice existed as two separate sites, each with a highly engaged audience. Bringing them together into a single site required a major shift in content strategy, with a strong focus on the user journey and overall experience. The goal was to preserve existing traffic and familiarity, while helping users discover the full range of AFJ’s work and stay engaged over time.

We redesigned and built AFJ.org to represent 3 key pillars of their work:
AFJ Justice Advocacy: Why Courts Matter & Research Hub of tracker tools and reporting.
Bolder Advocacy: Resource Library, Training & Events for nonprofits and organizations.
Membership: Outreach & Networking.
Integrating Strategy, Tech and Design for a Cohesive Outcome
We addressed this challenge through a combination of thoughtful site architecture, intentional UI and UX decisions, and clear visual cues throughout the design. Using AFJ’s brand system, each program has a slightly distinct visual feel so users always know where they are, while still being able to move easily between Bolder Advocacy resources and AFJ research.
On the technical side, we approached the site consolidation with care and precision. Both the AFJ and Bolder Advocacy sites included thousands of articles and resources with highly active audiences, so we developed a detailed migration and redirect strategy to preserve traffic and maintain SEO visibility throughout the transition.
A Dynamic System for AFJ’s Constantly
As we continued our work with AFJ following the original redesign, the organization aimed to elevate its research and reporting on the judicial system while making complex data and tracker tools more digestible for users. Because this information changes frequently, the solution needed to support ongoing updates as well as the addition of new tracker pages and data integrations over time.
We designed a dynamic, flexible table component that could accommodate multiple use cases and data sources. This system allows the AFJ team to efficiently build, manage, and scale tools such as the State Courts Hub, the Vacancy Tracker, and the Senior Status Tracker.
