Independent Sector’s Health of the U.S. Nonprofit Sector Report is a flagship annual publication that offers national-level insights into the health and performance of the nonprofit sector. The report shares key insights on how the nation’s 1.9 million registered nonprofits are shaped by economic and financial conditions, workforce dynamics, trust and governance, and public policy and advocacy. Historically released as a long-form PDF offering valuable insights, its static format limited how audiences could explore and engage with the findings.
To elevate the report’s impact, and timed with a sleek new brand refresh, Independent Sector set out to transform it into an interactive digital experience that was more accessible, engaging, and easier to navigate. Teal partnered with their team to create a modern, multi-page microsite that gives this critical research a more prominent home which encourages deeper exploration, supports storytelling, and connects the report to the organization’s broader policy and programmatic work. The Archie framework was used with components to best fit each main focus, such as easy navigation between sections, bite-sized key takeaways for each section, and supporting beautiful data visualization pieces for an array of different data.
The landing page opens with a clear narrative and high-level data visualizations that set the stage for the report’s key insights. From the start, users get a strong sense of the “state of the sector” and understand why these findings matter. Clean, intuitive navigation guides visitors into each of the four focus areas, where the most important takeaways are surfaced upfront and supported with interactive charts and visual data storytelling. The structure not only makes a 30-page report feel more manageable, but also creates space for users to spend more time with the content in meaningful ways.
From there, the microsite provides pathways for deeper exploration through interactive data, links to related research and policy resources, as well as a backend where Independent Sector can add, delete, reorder and scale this report as much as is needed.
Mobile-friendly design ensures that leaders, practitioners, and partners can engage with the report wherever they are. While a whole website is designed to house the report, we also included an easy-to-access PDF download for offline reading and sharing. The result is a mornamic, user-centered experience that elevates Independent Sector’s thought leadership and transforms a static publication into a powerful digital resource for the nonprofit community.
