Open Path helps uninsured and underinsured individuals access affordable mental health care through a network of more than 35,000 therapists across the U.S. and Canada.
The platform is a mission-driven digital marketplace, matching people in need with therapists looking to grow their client base. Yet years of patchwork updates had led to fragile code and a frustrating user experience.
Over time, the platform’s growing pains had become clear. Matches between clients and therapists weren’t always reliable, and staff were burdened with manual processes that slowed down signups. Therapists struggled to update their profiles, while clients lacked control over their own accounts.
Behind the scenes, the codebase needed strong security for personal data. And beyond the technical work, the brand experience had to feel safe and reassuring. For someone seeking therapy, trust and emotional sensitivity matter just as much as functionality.
We redesigned therapist profiles to create a stronger sense of connection from the very first interaction. Each profile can now feature video introductions, allowing therapists to share their personality and approach in a more authentic way. We also refined existing details, such as using clearer language, highlighting online availability, and making office locations easy to find.
We streamlined the therapist application process to make it faster, clearer, and more secure. The new system supports both U.S. and Canadian licensing requirements, automatically adapting to each country’s criteria for practice. Therapists can now upload their licensure and eligibility documents directly within the platform, removing the need for staff to manage submissions by email. To ensure every account is legitimate, we also introduced two-factor authentication and email-verification during sign-up for stronger identity verification.
Therapists now enjoy a polished, LinkedIn-style experience for updating their public profiles and showcasing their practice. It’s fully password-protected, with intuitive tools for updating specialities, adding new details, and maintaining account security. Therapists can also access exclusive member benefits and educational materials directly from the dashboard, creating a seamless hub for managing both their profile and professional resources.
We reimagined the client registration experience to build trust and confidence from the very first click. The new flow guides users step by step, clearly explaining why information is collected and how it’s protected. Payments are quick and seamless through Stripe, and pricing automatically adjusts for users in Canada. We also introduced a client account dashboard where they can easily manage their details, enjoy discounts for wellness products, and connect with the right therapist, all in one place.
We set up email automation to keep both therapists and clients engaged at every step. Timely reminders guide users to complete their applications and registrations, reducing drop-off and saving staff time. Therapists receive instant notifications when they’re selected by a prospective client, helping them to expand their business with qualified clients. Automated onboarding flows welcome both therapists and clients, ensuring a smooth start and a consistent, supportive experience for everyone
We built internal reporting dashboards to give the Open Path team clear visibility into platform activity and performance. The new tools track client registrations, therapist applications, incomplete transactions, and key demographic metrics across both audiences. By consolidating data into a single, easy-to-read view, the team can identify trends and make faster, data-informed decisions with far less manual work.
