ITVS

A refreshed brand story and website for the incubator powering acclaimed documentaries

Independent Documentaries That Bridge America’s Divides

Founded within public media and still guided by its mission, ITVS supports independent filmmakers telling America’s most vital stories. Reaching 38 million viewers annually and earning Emmys, Peabodys, and festival accolades, it remains a steadfast champion of documentary film’s power to spark dialogue and empathy.

Teal Media collaborated closely with the ITVS team to deliver a cohesive brand refresh and website redesign. Here’s what we did:

  • Brand Visual Refresh
  • Brand Messaging
  • Content Strategy
  • Information Architecture
  • UX + Visual Design
  • User Testing
  • Front End Development
  • Back End Development

Brand

  • From Static to Cinematic

Slightly offbeat and unapologetically its own, ITVS embodies the spirit of independent film. Teal delivered a modern refresh that builds on the brand’s existing equity—keeping the logo, black and red primary colors, and signature shapes—while infusing new depth, motion, and dimension. The updated look features a bold, flexible identity that captures ITVS’s dynamic energy and forward-thinking storytelling across all mediums.

    Website

  • Zooming Out to the Big Picture

The content strategy raises awareness of the full scope of ITVS’s work. While it’s known for funding, it also serves as a creative partner by co-producing documentaries, supporting filmmakers at every career stage, protecting their creative freedom and copyright, and guaranteeing audiences for their documentaries. A new landing page celebrates how ITVS provides the necessary infrastructure to broadcast the nation’s untold stories.

Data Integration for a Smart Archive

To showcase ITVS’s library of nearly 1,500 documentaries, Teal built a catalog that syncs directly with their NetSuite database for managing film production. The integration pulls in filmmaker details, summaries, awards, and topics automatically, keeping data consistent across platforms. The new experience also introduces video trailers, giving audiences a first look at the films through PBS’s proprietary player.

    Funding the Next Act

For decades, ITVS was sustained by federal funding. When public media support ended in 2025, the organization faced a new challenge: building independent revenue. The redesigned site evolved into a strategic fundraising and partnership tool to engage donors and foundations.
