Democracy Alliance Brand & Website Design

A brand and website built to influence this country’s most progressive donors.
The Challenge

Real Power, Invisible by Design

Since 2005, Democracy Alliance has aligned philanthropists, labor unions, and foundations behind a shared progressive strategy, moving more than $2 billion. The brand hadn’t caught up: it read as dated rather than as the influential force the Alliance had become.

The harder problem was structural. The Alliance’s value is discretion, the ability to let donors and strategists speak candidly without turning the room into a press release. A prospective partner needed to feel its influence without ever seeing a member list or a name attached to a dollar figure. Show too much, and the community it protects is exposed. Show too little, and the impact goes unproven. Either one costs the Alliance the partners it needs.

Democracy Alliance needed to show its real asset: how they convene aligned funders, resource shared strategy, and grow the coalition. That’s what could be shown in full, without exposing a single member.

That insight organized both tracks of the work: an identity built to read as strategic and influential rather than as a movement brand, and a site architecture built around the Democracy Alliance’s investment pillars instead of donor bios.

We're Shaping The Future of Democracy

An Updated Visual Identity With Influence

The refreshed identity leans into deep jewel-tone blues, a dignified serif paired with a clean supporting sans, and photography that mixes full-color feature shots with filtered, stylized supporting images. Every choice reinforces the same intention: Democracy Alliance is influential, strategic, and exclusive. It’s the room where decisions get made, not the rally where they get announced. The mark itself evolves rather than replaces the equity that the Democracy has built over two decades, so current partners still recognize the organization they’ve trusted, while new audiences see the confidence of one that shapes outcomes instead of reacting to them.

A Streamlined, Focused Website

Through discovery, we knew the Democracy Alliance didn’t need a deep website, it needed a small number of pages doing focused work. The site focused on five core destinations — Home, Our Work, Our Story, Insights, and Join Us — each built as a fully custom template. Supporting pages are built with a flexible component library, so the Democracy Alliance’s team can publish new pages without waiting on a designer and without letting the site grow into the comprehensive archive it was never meant to be.

Built on WordPress with a custom theme, the site targets WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility by default and gives the Democracy Alliance’s staff the SEO and content tools to keep pace after launch. This infrastructure lets a small communications team run a national donor network’s public face without the need for outside help.

The Voice: A Platform Built Around a Byline

Rather than a generic blog, Insights was designed as a leadership channel for op-eds, formal statements, and posts explicitly tagged “From the President.” The Meet Our President page gives Pamela Shifman a standing home on the site, automatically surfacing her latest writing so the page keeps working between major content updates. For an organization whose credibility depends on relationships more than announcements, giving its president a maintained platform carries more weight than another paragraph of descriptive copy.

The Impact

The Work Begins Now

The launch went smoothly, and the Democracy Alliance team is excited to put the new site to work — a brand and a home online that finally match the influence the organization has built over two decades.

Everyone is so happy with the new site and the roll out of our branded materials. Our president has even received positive feedback from some of her peers commenting on the new look. Board, Staff, Partners... everyone is pleased.
