Redesigning a website to help improve government effectiveness through innovation
Work
Hip Hop Caucus has been on a mission for over 20 years to empower communities who are first and worst impacted by injustice. They use the power of organization, activism, advocacy, and creative expression to fight for racial justice, healthy communities, and a healthy planet.
In the wake of a total rebrand, they approached Teal to help them reimagine their website. In addition to needing to implement their new visual brand across the site, they wanted to create a web experience that accurately reflected the breadth, depth, and history of their work across issues and platforms.
Their biggest challenge was that their primary audience groups of activists, donors and supporters struggled to understand the massive scope of the Caucus’s work. We discovered that all audience groups were most interested in one or two main issues, and ultimately organized the entire site according to their four main issue areas. Each of these has its own subbrand and color palette, which serve as wayfinding for the various media, campaigns, actions and more related to that issue.
In addition to their organizing, activist and advocacy work, Hip Hop Caucus works with artists to produce all kinds of media. However, much of that media is spread across different platforms and subdomains. In order to spotlight and honor that work, we created a central hub for all media produced by the Caucus, filterable by both platform/issue area and type. Externally located items still live on their own URLs, but are all cross-listed here.
We worked together closely to create a web experience flexible and intuitive enough to reflect the monumental amount of work the Caucus has accomplished, and scalable enough to grow with them as they unite a coalition to tackle some of the most pressing issues of our time.
