Work
The Harvard Kennedy School Government Performance Lab partners with state and local governments to develop and implement service reforms that address pressing social challenges. Through over 278 projects in 38 states, the GPL improves government effectiveness by testing new approaches, sharing insights, and equipping leaders with tools to drive lasting impact.
The Government Performance Lab needs its website to clearly showcase the collective impact of its projects, however, the original site lacked cohesion, which made it difficult for users to understand how initiatives connect. Confusing navigation, a weak search function, and disorganized content structure hindered access to resources, while a dated content management system made updates cumbersome.
Our solution was a revamped information architecture with strong underlying taxonomy, a modernized design, and an easy to use back-end build.
One of the main goals of the Government Performance Lab’s new website is to clearly convey their breadth of work through key priority areas, associated focus areas, and a large portfolio of on-the-ground projects. The interconnectedness of their work can be complex, so we created an intuitive information architecture that allowed users to see these connections, and jump right into the details that interested them most. Flexible detail pages allow the Government Performance Lab to build pages in the CMS that work for the nuanced needs of each individual project.
One of the key goals of the Harvard Government Performance Lab’s new website is to showcase its impact so government leaders, staff, and funders can see its work in action, access research and insights, and explore collaboration opportunities. We created featured Impact panels that could be used on the homepage and key work landing pages, driving users to learn more about the Government Performance Lab’s broad impact.
Visually, it was important for the Government Performance Lab to push the boundaries of modern design, while adhering to Harvard University’s broader brand guidelines. Through a live design discovery, we explored what base brand elements we wanted to pull forward and expand upon for the new website. Overall the design is clean, modern and unique to the Government Performance Lab, but still like it lives within the Harvard brand universe.
