NTI Nuclear Security Index

Turning nuclear security data into a tool for global action

A Long-Running Partnership

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) is a leading organization in nuclear security and non-proliferation. Every few years, they release the Nuclear Security Index, which is a comprehensive assessment of how 176 countries are managing nuclear materials and security risks. Teal Media has supported NTI in two of those cycles: first to modernize the Index for its 2023 release, and again for 2026, where the challenge has evolved from making it clearer to making it drive change.

2023

  • A Design Overhaul Built for Clarity

NTI came to us with a strong foundation but the website was in need of a refresh. We redesigned the 2023 Index to feel modern and cohesive while maintaining some continuity with NTI’s main website.

    Key work included:

    • Visual consistency and accessibility. We created new icons, unified the typography, and updated the color palette to bridge the Index and the main NTI site. Significant user experience and accessibility improvements made the Index more navigable across devices.
    • Handling complex data at scale. The Index processes an enormous amount of country-level data. We streamlined back-end data handling, documented NTI’s datasets carefully, and presented information in a more structured, comprehensible way, which laid the groundwork for future cycles.
    • Launch support. We provided email and social media collateral for the 2023 launch, which garnered coverage in the Washington Post.

    2026

  • From Analysis to Action

For the 2026 Index, the redesign brief went deeper. NTI’s audience of government officials and industry policymakers already understands the stakes of nuclear security. What they need is a tool that tells them exactly what to do about it.

    The core shift: web-first, recommendations-led

Rather than leading with data and burying the findings, the 2026 Index leads with recommendations and uses data to back them up. The site restructures the experience around what governments can do, not just how they score.

    Clearer pathways on country pages

Each country page now prominently surfaces improvement scenarios, which map directly to actionable steps governments can take, including ones they’ve already made progress on.

    A leaner, more focused site

The site becomes the primary product instead of a PDF for the full report. A Stories section replaces the existing Updates tab, serving as a home for case studies highlighting countries that are making progress on nuclear security.

A message that connects to the moment

As countries around the world expand nuclear energy capacity, the case for nuclear security has never been more urgent or more relevant. The 2026 Index threads that needle, positioning security as the foundation for safe nuclear energy growth.
