With 15,000+ pages, unstructured content, and a tangled taxonomy, the Nuclear Threat Initiative’s (NTI) website was inefficient to manage and confusing for NTI’s users. It was time for a ground-up rebuild to make the “Wikipedia of nukes” dramatically more accessible and easy to use.
Teal devised a robust solution that simplifies the site infrastructure, information architecture, taxonomy, and overall user experience. And together, we helped NTI break down internal silos to develop a site that puts user needs first.
The hub pages for NTI’s main focus areas—Nuclear, Biological, Science & Tech—include a core narrative about the threat and how NTI is working to address it with specific projects, research, and experts. The hub pages are dynamically created by the new shared, site-wide taxonomy that makes the pages vibrant and keeps maintenance to a minimum.
New country profiles aggregate content from across all threats (Nuclear, Biological, Science & Tech) to give users a clear and comprehensive view of all activity associated with a particular country.
Treaties and Regimes section features an interactive map where users can explore by country, type of threat, and name of treaty and regime. When users click on a particular country in the map view, they see a snapshot of that country’s membership in topline treaties and regimes.
Facilities map pinpoints nuclear/biological/missile/chemical locations across the world.
Teal developed a new look-and-feel based on NTI guidelines that conveys a serious and modern tone. In NTI’s words, it’s a fresh design that “reflects our hopeful outlook for the future where we can eliminate catastrophic and existential risks to humanity.”
An extensible site infrastructure built on the WordPress CMS that allows NTI administrators to manage all aspects of site functionality directly from within the WordPress interface—without the need to write custom code.
Powerful search, including “you might also like”-style results with the ability to search inside of PDFs and other documents, as well as filtering and sorting of content by keywords, common taxonomy, or type.
