Knight-Georgetown Institute

Building a boldly simple brand and website for a new organization that connects technology and information.

The Knight-Georgetown Institute connects independent research with technology policy and design. As a new organization, they are seeking to establish themselves as a trusted, non-partisan, and rigorous central hub that helps shape how technology is used to produce, disseminate, and access information. Teal Media designed KGI’s visual brand and website to start building on their expertise, and educate and engage with policymakers, media, and researchers.

A modular logo and brand that embraces structure and clarity

Teal created a visual identity from scratch, with abstracted KGI letters confidently standing at the heart of the new logo. Elemental in nature, the geometric mark plays within the theme of translation—embodying what the organization is all about: simplifying complex ideas into their core elements.

The overarching brand system features foundational elements that are equally practical and contemporary:

  • Flexible logo with shapes that can scale to fit a variety of spaces and content.
  • Simple photography treatments and collages that can easily make any imagery feel stylized and on-brand.
  • Leveraging Georgetown University fonts and colors in a uniquely modern way.

A highly scannable and flexible website with a boldly simple aesthetic

Teal created a web design system that’s sharp, well-structured, and striking in its simplicity:

  • Page templates ensure that content is highly scannable, legible, and flexible.
  • Article pages provide authors a multitude of ways to present content.
  • Line work, font combinations, button shapes, and micro-interactions provide subtle delight for users while consuming content.
  • Simple brand elements and shapes allow the visual brand to come through.

Teal exceeded our expectations with their excellent website and brand collateral designs and effective project management. Their collaborative approach, exceptional communication, and responsiveness to feedback was top notch. Our site and brand have gotten rave reviews from outside stakeholders.
