Streamlining access to resources on sexual and reproductive rights
Patient consulting with a doctor

Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH) is a collaborative research group at the University of California, San Francisco that conducts innovative research on issues related to sexual and reproductive rights. ANSIRH is a go-to resource for advocates and partners within the reproductive health space. But their website was old, and hard for partners to use. It looked stale, and its confusing structure made it hard for visitors to explore and engage with ANSIRH’s rich collection of research and publications.

A streamlined architecture

The content plan that we created was a crucial part of the development process, as we needed to migrate the existing Drupal framework, coordinate content migration, and introduce a new tagging system. Having a clearly outlined plan and steps along the way helped to ensure a smooth development process.

The new architecture is based on specific “topic doorways” that let users easily find research and tools on key landing pages. We also created a curated “Research & Tools” landing page so that “casual” users who aren’t professional researchers and academics can quickly get a sense of ANSIRH’s priorities, and Subject Matter Experts can dive deep into the research that matters most to them.

The new homepage of the ANSIRH website

ANSIRH’s research is people-centered and multidisciplinary. They wanted a design that feels warm, authentic and human, while at the same time easily directs users to the research they’re seeking. The new site:

  • Features “Top Questions” panels that make it easy for non-experts to find answers to their most pressing questions.
  • Features research & tools that visually pop against a warm, soft background so the content feels inviting and encourages exploration.
  • Showcases illustration, authentic photography, and bright, warm colors to make the site friendly and appealing to academics and casual supporters alike.

Together, Teal and ANSIRH revitalized the website, creating a solution that feels warm and accessible, introducing clear and easy pathways for partners and website visitors to access the research and tools that they need to inform their thinking around sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Mobile accessibility was important to ANSIRH, as many of their website visitors access the content through mobile phones. Our designs are all mobile responsive, with particular attention paid to the mobile user experience of robust filtering and sorting functionality.
